Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
Periods that are too heavy, too frequent, too long, or bleeding between periods or after menopause.
Symptoms
- Soaking a pad every 1–2 hours
- Periods lasting more than 7 days
- Bleeding between periods or after intercourse
- Any bleeding after menopause
- Tiredness from anaemia
Causes
- Hormonal imbalance
- Fibroids and polyps
- Adenomyosis
- Thyroid disorders
- Endometrial hyperplasia or, rarely, cancer
Risk Factors
- Perimenopause
- PCOS
- Obesity
- Blood-thinning medicines
Diagnosis
- Pelvic ultrasound
- Blood tests (haemoglobin, thyroid, hormones)
- Hysteroscopy with endometrial sampling
- Pap smear
Treatment
- Medicines to reduce bleeding
- Hormonal therapy
- Hysteroscopic removal of polyps or submucous fibroids
- Hysterectomy for persistent severe bleeding when family is complete
Recovery
- Hysteroscopy is usually a day-care procedure
- Iron supplements to correct anaemia
- Follow-up to confirm bleeding is controlled
