Ectopic Pregnancy
A pregnancy that implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. It needs urgent care.
Symptoms
- Missed period with a positive pregnancy test
- One-sided lower abdominal pain
- Vaginal spotting
- Shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting (possible rupture — emergency)
Causes
- Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
- Previous pelvic infection
- Previous tubal surgery
Risk Factors
- Previous ectopic pregnancy
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Endometriosis
- Pregnancy with an IUD in place
- Fertility treatment
- Smoking
Diagnosis
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- Serial beta-hCG blood tests
- Clinical examination
Treatment
- Medical treatment in selected early cases
- Laparoscopic surgery to remove the pregnancy
- Emergency surgery for rupture
Recovery
- After laparoscopy, usually home in 1–2 days
- hCG is followed until it returns to zero
- Early scan in the next pregnancy
