COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, compassionate answers to the questions patients ask Dr. Fehmida Shaikh most often.

What is the difference between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?

Laparoscopy involves tiny (0.5–1 cm) keyhole incisions in the abdomen to inspect and treat organs within the pelvic cavity (uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries). Hysteroscopy uses a fine telescope inserted naturally through the cervix into the uterine cavity without any external incisions.

What gynaecological conditions can be treated with minimally invasive surgery?

Laparoscopy treats uterine fibroids (myomectomy), ovarian cysts (cystectomy), ectopic pregnancies, pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, and tubal recanalization. Hysteroscopy removes uterine polyps, submucosal fibroids, intrauterine septums, and resolves intrauterine adhesions.

What are the advantages of keyhole surgery over conventional open surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery delivers significantly less post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, shorter hospital stays (often 24 to 48 hours), faster return to daily activities, and tiny, barely visible cosmetic scars.

How long is the recovery period following laparoscopic surgery?

Most patients walk comfortably on the same day and are discharged within 24 to 48 hours. Light daily routines can usually be resumed in 3 to 7 days, with complete internal healing occurring over 2 to 4 weeks.

What anaesthesia is used during laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures?

Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure complete muscle relaxation and patient comfort. Diagnostic or minor hysteroscopic procedures may be done under short sedation or regional anaesthesia.

Is laparoscopic gynaecological surgery covered by health insurance?

Yes. Medically necessary laparoscopic surgeries (such as fibroid removal, cystectomy, or hysterectomy) are standard covered procedures under mediclaim and health insurance policies. Our hospital supports cashless and reimbursement processing.
