Endometriosis & Adenomyosis
Conditions where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus (endometriosis) or into its muscle wall (adenomyosis).
Symptoms
- Painful periods that worsen over time
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Pain during intercourse
- Heavy periods (common in adenomyosis)
- Difficulty conceiving
Causes
- Retrograde menstruation
- Immune and hormonal factors
- Genetic predisposition
- Exact cause is not fully understood
Risk Factors
- Family history
- Early periods or short cycles
- Never having been pregnant
- Previous uterine surgery (adenomyosis)
Diagnosis
- Clinical history and pelvic examination
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- MRI in selected cases
- Diagnostic laparoscopy — confirms and treats endometriosis
Treatment
- Pain relief and hormonal therapy
- Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis and endometriomas
- Fertility-focused treatment when pregnancy is desired
- Hysterectomy for severe adenomyosis when family is complete
Recovery
- Laparoscopy: usually home in 1–2 days
- Hormonal therapy is often continued to reduce recurrence
- Regular follow-up to monitor symptoms
