Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Removal of the uterus through small keyhole incisions instead of a large abdominal cut.
Symptoms & When It Is Recommended
- Heavy bleeding not controlled by other treatment
- Large or multiple fibroids
- Severe adenomyosis
- Pre-cancerous changes of the uterus or cervix
Causes
- Recommended when the uterus itself is the cause of symptoms and family is complete
Risks & Risk Factors
- General surgical risks: bleeding, infection, injury to nearby organs (uncommon)
- Previous abdominal surgery may affect the approach
Diagnosis
- Ultrasound and blood tests before surgery
- Pap smear and endometrial sampling when indicated
- Anaesthesia fitness check
Treatment
- Performed under general anaesthesia
- The uterus is removed through small incisions
- Ovaries are preserved or removed based on age and findings
Recovery
- Usually 1–2 days in hospital
- Most women resume light activity in 1–2 weeks and routine work in 3–4 weeks
- Avoid heavy lifting for about 6 weeks

Not if the ovaries are preserved. If both ovaries are removed, menopause begins immediately.
